How to write a cover letter that gets read
Why your CV and cover letter should match
Recruiters often open your CV and cover letter side by side. When both share your name, your contact details, and a consistent look, the application reads as one piece of work instead of two files put together in a hurry.
In Simple CV the cover letter lives in the same profile as your CV, so your name and contact details carry over. Change your phone number once and both documents update.
The structure that works
Header: your contact details, the date, and the company's name and address. The templates lay this out for you.
Greeting: use the hiring manager's name if you can find it. "Dear Ms Costa" beats "To whom it may concern".
Opening: name the role and give one concrete reason you're a fit. Skip "I am writing to apply for". They already know.
Middle: one or two short paragraphs of proof. Pick two achievements from your CV that match the job ad and add the numbers behind them.
Closing: say you'd welcome an interview, thank them, and sign off. You can add your signature as an image so the letter looks finished.
Length and tone
Keep it under one page, around 250 to 400 words. Write the way you'd talk to a colleague you respect: direct, specific, no clichés.
Write one letter per job. A generic letter sent to fifty companies reads like one.
Writing it with AI without sounding like AI
Paste the job description and the AI drafts a letter from your CV and the role. Treat it as a first draft. Cut anything you wouldn't say out loud, add one detail only you know, and check every fact.
You get three free AI cover letter drafts. Premium makes them unlimited.
What employers expect in different countries
In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland a cover letter (Anschreiben) is expected for most applications, and it's read closely. In the UK and Ireland most applications still include one. When a job portal has no upload slot, paste the letter into the message field or the body of your email.
